The benefits of green schoolyards for school communities

This year’s Festival of Social Sciences will feature an immersive installation demonstrating the benefits of green schoolyards for school communities and the wider city based on work carried out by Dr. Miguel Kanai in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Schools contribute strategic resources for sustainability initiatives. In built up cities with scant open green spaces accessible to diverse communities, schoolyards become essential. They can often be the sole area with potential for increasing the amount of vegetation, promoting biodiversity, and mitigating exposure to different forms of urban pollution. ‘Greened’ schools also provide opportunities for nature-based education and play. There is a broad range of biophilic classroom formats where students can learn how to benefit from and care for the natural environment in the city.

The immersive installation demonstrates the benefits of green schoolyards for school communities and the wider city based on work carried out by Dr. Miguel Kanai (Geography and Planning) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and with contributions from South Yorkshire led by Prof. Beth Perry (Urban Institute) and Prof. Ross Cameron (Architecture and Landscape). The Festival will take place at the Millenium Gallery from Friday 31 October to Sunday 2 November 2025. A full programme and directions can be found .  (Free, no reservation required).
