We lead and support research into the delivery of primary health care focusing on general practice.  Our team includes clinical academics, and health and social scientists, and has a strong culture of developing early career clinical academics in general practice.

We use a broad range of methods, including evidence synthesis, analysis of large datasets, qualitative research and clinical trials. We work closely with colleagues in multiple clinical and academic disciplines to deliver multidisciplinary research. Much of our work is driven by a commitment to reduce inequalities in the way healthcare, and research about healthcare is delivered.

We form part of the School of Medicine and Population Health and work collaboratively with several partners within the School and wider University such as the Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), and POLARIS.   The , forms part of the Primary Care Research Group, and works with patients and professionals in underserved communities in Yorkshire and Humber to enable inclusive primary care research. 

We work in close collaboration with  which is a federation for all GP practices within Sheffield, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Trust. We were formerly part of the Academic Unit of Primary Care, involving both research and teaching and based at Samuel Fox House. 

In 2023 as part of the School of Medicine and Population Health restructure the , led by Professor Ben Jackson, moved to the main medical school site. The Primary Care Research Group moved to Regent Court to be part of .
