- Profile
-
I am a GP and researcher whose primary interest is in persistent physical symptoms and functional somatic disorders. I currently lead the Health Services Research Section of the Sheffield Centre for Health And Related Research at the University of Sheffield.
- Research interests
-
My work on persistent physical symptoms: builds on the success of the Multiple Symptoms Study 3 and the findings of our recent evidence synthesis of interventions for fatigue in long-term conditions. It seeks ways to harness new developments in the science of symptoms to improve outcomes for patients.
My wider health services research includes research into complex emotion disorders and the use of complex systems and engineering thinking to understand health systems at scale. The importance of person-centred care runs through all my work.

MBChB: I lead the Critical Appraisal SSC in Phase 1 and contribute to teaching on evidence based medicine. I contribute to the introductory lectures to the Research Attachment SSC in Phase 2 and regularly host groups of students on attachment. In later years I’m interested to teach advanced clinical communication techniques including effective reassurance.
