Profile

Andrew Tylecote studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University, where he gained First Class Honours in 1968. He went on to gain an MA and a BPhil in Economics, at Sussex and Oxford, and a PhD from Sheffield for his book The Causes of the Present Inflation. From 1994 to 2011 he was Professor of the Economics and Management of Technological Change at the University of Sheffield, and now holds the same title, as Emeritus Professor.

His work has focused on a series of key economic issues, from inflation to technological change and economic growth in the world economy.  He was Visiting Fellow at the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex in 1984.  His book on the Long Wave in the World Economy was published by Routledge in 1992, and described by Chris Freeman as ‘a tour de force’.  Since 2000 he has focused largely on the effect of business systems, corporate governance and finance on technological change, both in developed countries and in China. His book on Corporate Governance, Finance and the Technological Advantage of Nations, co-authored with Francesca Visintin, won the Myrdal Prize for 2010. He has been Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University (twice) and Zhejiang University.  He also served recently on the Nuffield Council of Bioethics’ Working Party on Emerging Biotechnologies.  Between 1992 and 1998 he was Treasurer of the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy. From 2005 to 2011 he was Director of Postgraduate Taught Programmes at University of Sheffield Management School.

He is well known as an inspiring speaker and lecturer.
