Profile

I joined the Management School in 2013 as Chair in Management, having previously worked at Swansea University for more than 20 years, latterly as Professor of Economics and Director of the Swansea Academy of Learning & Teaching. During my time in Sheffield I have undertaken various leadership roles, and am currently the School's Director of Strategic Education Projects.

An economist by training, my research interfaces applied labour economics and employment relations, focusing on the management and resolution of workplace conflict, including mediation/ADR and Employment Tribunals. With more than 100 research outputs for both academic and policymaker/practitioner audiences, I have also led and/or contributed to a range of funded projects for bodies including the European Commission, Ministry of Justice, Acas, TUC, Low Pay Commission, etc.

I am currently part of a team working on a large-scale ESRC-funded project evaluating the impact of a training intervention for line managers.

Teaching interests

I am passionate about teaching and learning and seek to be both an innovative and reflective educator, to provide an outstanding learning experience for students, and leadership and support for colleagues in developing their teaching practice. This is reflected in my status as a Chartered Association of Business Schools Certified Management and Business Educator (CMBE).

Adopting a constructionist orientation, I aim to ensure students can see the practical applications of theoretical ideas and are exposed to teaching which is – to use Griffiths’ 2004 taxonomy – research-informed, research-led, research-oriented and, where appropriate, research-based.

Winner of multiple teaching awards, including nationally from the (then) Higher Education Academy (HEA) subject centre for Economics, and more recently a University of Sheffield Senate Award for Leadership in Learning & Teaching, I have held a range of educational leadership roles, and am currently the Management School's Director of Strategic Education Projects.

Professional activities and memberships

I undertake a range of additional, professional activities. These include being a member of the Civil Mediation Council Workplace and Employment Group and the Learning & Performance Institute (LPI) Membership Advisory Board, while I am also an Associate of the Economics Network (formerly the HEA subject centre for Economics) and a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA), Bonn.

PhD Supervision

I have supervised 10 PhD students to completion. Given other commitments, I am not currently looking to take on new students.
