Dr. Susan Oman, Senior Lecturer in Data, AI, and Society and the AI & In/equality Lead for the Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI), is taking a prominent role at an international conference in Lima, Peru. Susan will be addressing a number of critical issues across her research concerns of AI, digital, and data inequalities.

Setting the Stage for a Global Dialogue
Dr. Oman will play a key part, opening the conference, and setting the tone for a week of North-South exchange and collaboration.
- the opening session, titled "What cultural policy do we need in the era of digital platforms?" features Dr Susan Oman in conversation with keynote speaker, Néstor GarcÃa Canclini, one of Latin America’s most influential intellectuals, recognised across communication and cultural studies, anthropology and sociology.
- , data workshop: informed by her and previous data literacy workshops across UK government departments, international practitioners and policy-makers, Dr Oman will team up with co-investigators from their ESRC grant for transforming cultural national data infrastructure.*
- , Digital and International panel presentation: Dr Oman will also present critical and reflections from her two-year UK government fellowship on digital policy. Her offers critical analysis and governance recommendations that address local, national and international inequalities.
The Cultural Trends Global Dialogue is hosted by the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) and supported by partners like the British Council and UNESCO, aligning with the University’s commitment to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The event follows the hugely successful inaugural Global Dialogue event which took place at the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center in Santiago de Chile from 28-30 November, 2023. That event, organized by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage and the University of Chile saw over 250 delegates from 5 continents come together to debate and discuss cultural policy in a dialogue format designed to be non-hierarchical, open access, porous and sector-facing.

Co-designed by a team of academics, policy makers and practitioners, this event will continue building the international research community from Europe, Latin America and globally. The motivation of this Global Dialogue event is to develop future networks with – and between – academics from Latin America and their peers at a global level. Each Global Dialogue carries forward the networks and conversations from previous iterations.
This event will discuss the current and future challenges across issues of Cultural Policy and Sustainable Development. It will feature talks by international guests, discussion workshops and meetings between specialists and interested publics, as well as with cultural organizations, international cooperation officers, and institutions. The event will also lead to a bilingual special issue of Cultural Trends coordinated by a guest editorial team of LATAM and other scholars.
