- Profile
-
Dr Patrick J Smith was awarded a first class BSc degree in Applied Chemistry from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1997, which he studied for part-time whilst working as a Technical Officer for Ilford Ltd.
In 2002, he was awarded his PhD in Engineering Materials from the University of Cambridge for his research into increasing the critical current density of bulk high-temperature superconductors.
He then had post-doc positions working first with Brian Derby in Manchester (2002 2005), Ulrich Schubert in Eindhoven (2005 2007) and Jan Korvink in Freiburg (2007 2010).
In July 2010, he was appointed to the position of Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield.
- Research interests
-
Dr Smith's main research area is inkjet printing. He is interested in applied inkjet printing, using inkjet as a means of manufacture in additive applications as well as in areas such as digital print and digital textiles.
He is also interested in fundamental inkjet, with a focus on variability in inkjet droplet production. He is particularly interested in reactive inkjet printing, which uses inkjet as a chemical synthesis tool.
