Dr Mahmood graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2012. Following this, she completed Dental Foundation Training (2012-2013) and multiple Dental Core Training posts in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Radiology (2012-2018). During this time, she gained MFDS at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (2017), Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (2017) and Diploma in Conscious Sedation (Merit, 2018). She was subsequently appointed as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Oral Surgery during which she completed higher surgical training with award of MOralSurg (2021).
She has an outstanding track record in research, having completed a Masters in Clinical Research with Distinction (2021) and a prestigious NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship (2021–2024), which supported her PhD on the application of Artificial Intelligence for early oral cancer detection. Her work has been recognised nationally and internationally, earning several notable awards, including the BSODR Presidents Prize (2025) for significant contributions to translational clinical research and the BSODR Senior Colgate Award (2023), the UK’s most prestigious PhD-level prize in Oral & Dental Research. Additional accolades include the IADR Oral Medicine & Pathology Research Prize (2022), ABAOMS Research Prize (2023), and BSOMP Potts Research Prize (2022). In recognition of her academic and clinical achievements, she was promoted to Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Oral Surgeon at the School of Clinical Dentistry, University of Sheffield, in 2024.

Dr Mahmood’s main research focus is the study of oral precancer progression to malignancy. She is a key member of the research group leading innovation in oral, head and neck cancer research. Her NIHR funded PhD (worth £353K) developed novel digital, computational and quantitative models for oral cancer risk prediction (supervisors Professors Syed Ali Khurram, Daniel Lambert and ) and received various national and international research prizes.
She is involved in a number of national and international collaborative projects exploring novel digital and spatial biomarkers in oral cancers and pre-cancers using state-of-the art approaches, including AI, Deep Learning, single-cell analysis and multiplex imaging.

As part of the NEOPATH Research Group, she works closely with Prof Ali Khurram to supervise and mentor clinical academic trainees, postgraduate and post-doctoral research students to drive forwards translational projects in oral, head and neck cancer research.

Dr Mahmood has completed a PGCert in Medical Education and obtained Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (2017).
She provides regular hands-on practical teaching in Oral Surgery to undergraduates, postgraduates and clinical trainees. She provides formal teaching to BDS students as part of the Integrated Clinical Practice, Oral Diseases and Integrated Human Diseases courses.
She is a personal tutor to BDS students, a registered Clinical Supervisor for speciality trainees in Oral Surgery, and a trained peer mentor for postgraduates in the Yorkshire & Humber Deanery.
She teaches on the Sheffield Implant Foundation Course and has previously led the RCS MFDS exam webinars for Oral Surgery broadcast to students in the UK, Burma and Kuala Lumpur (2017-2019).

Dr Mahmood provides a range of oral surgical treatment under local anaesthetic, conscious sedation and general anaesthetic. Her main clinical interests include the management of medically compromised patients and treatment of oral soft/hard tissue disease and pathology.
