Professor Reaney is the Dyson Chair and Professor in Ceramics. He joined the School in 1994. Prior to joining the School, he was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Essex and at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland. He obtained his PhD from the University of Manchester in 1989. He is a named investigator on 65 grants (>£50m) and has graduated over 80 Ph.D. and MSc students. He is a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society, IOM3, American and European Ceramic Societies and a member of the Word Academy of Science.
He is the highest cited UK based ceramist (13th worldwide) on Googlescholar with >400 publications, 30,000 citations and an h-index of 93. He has given >80 invited, keynote and plenary talks at international conferences.
He was the recipient of the Edward C Henry Award in 2001, the best Knowledge Transfer Partnership building on EPSRC funded research in 2009, the Verulam Medal for Ceramics (IOM3) in 2017 and the Robert Newnham award in 2021 for structure property relations in electroceramics.
He has worked extensively in collaboration with industry which has led to the commercialisation of several new electroceramics for the telecommunications and electronics industries.
He was Director of Transforming Foundation Network plus (TFIN+) and PI of the large grant Substitution and Sustainability in Functional Materials and Devices. In the TFIN+, he funded over 30 seed projects, many of whose outcomes have already been embedded within industry.

Prof. Reaney has made numerous significant contributions in ceramic and glass science and engineering in electron microscopy, diffraction, microwave ceramics, piezoelectric ceramics, low energy sintering, and materials sustainability.
