I hold a BEng in Metallurgy and a PhD in Solidification from the University of Sheffield. After a brief spell in industrial R&D at T&N Technology I returned to Sheffield to work on Nanostructured Soft Magnetic Materials with Professor Hywel Davies, with two further Post-Doctoral positions at TU-Delft at the Netherlands Institute for metals Research and then CENIM in Madrid. I joined the University of Sheffield as a Lecturer in 2003 and have built the AM activity here since. I was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2023.

My research lies at the interface between manufacturing technology and materials processing science and concerns the development of understanding of fundamental underlying physical principles related to materials processing to better control material form, integrity and function and hence economic value. This work is conducted in close collaboration with Industry and on an appropriate scale to allow rapid transition of new laboratory discoveries into industrial practice.
