Only 9 per cent of plastic in the UK is successfully recycled. Research led by Professor Joanna Gavins, from the School of English, highlights how language can be used to shape positive behaviours and change our relationship with plastic.

Hidden slavery story translated into English for first time

A graphic novel revealing a new insight into the lives of millions of Africans who fell victim to the slave trade has been brought to English speakers for the first time, thanks to modern languages students at the University of Sheffield.

Roots and Futures

Beginning in March 2020, a research project led by Dr Elizabeth Craig-Atkins from the Department of Archaeology, Roots and Futures started to explore four regions to the north of Sheffield city centre; Upperthorpe, Netherthorpe, Neepsend and Kelham Island. Its aim, to empower locals to discuss the heritage of their local areas and the personal stories that make these places meaningful to them.

Bridging cultures in mental health

1 in 4 people will experience struggles with their mental health in the course of a year. But cultural sensitivities and language differences put up barriers for many patients. Sheffield researchers have developed a training course to deepen the cultural understanding of healthcare professionals.
