- Profile
-
Chris worked for manufacturer Black and Decker then was sponsored through an MEng in Mechanical Engineering at Bristol University. Chris completed a PhD then post-doctoral research at the University of Leeds.
He has since completed over 18 years’ post-doctoral research at the University of Sheffield, joining the AMRC’s Machining Group in 2010. Whilst at AMRC, Chris has led over 100 projects in Machinability then Sustainable Subtractive Processes, supervising 75 personnel including nine MSc and four EngD students.
Chris’s main research interests are evaluation and reduction of environmental impact in machining, including swarf recyclability and alternative process cooling, as well as having a wide interest in machining science.
Chris is co-author of over 20 peer-reviewed research articles, with upwards of 500 citations of his published research. He was a member of the local organising committee for two international conferences.
Chris was co-recipient of a BAE Systems Chairman’s Medal for innovations in cutting tool analysis, leading a £10,000 project to facilitate £1M cost savings. He featured significantly in a Sheffield REF2021 impact case study with over £135M cost savings corroborated, also protection of 400 UK jobs. He is a chartered engineer and has been lead inventor on an international patent.
